Happy Healthy Skin for Summer
We all want healthy, beautiful skin. I took it for granted in my teens when it seemed to come naturally, but over the years ... oh, how things change! So my number one piece of advice is: it's never too early to start taking good care of your skin.
The skin is the largest organ of the body. On a daily basis, when we are out in the elements, our skin is breathing everything in. Likewise, whatever we consume, our skin is taking in. Thankfully, our bodies are amazing at looking after themselves. During the night while we are asleep the body naturally expels a lot of those toxins, healing and repairing itself. The toxins then lie on the surface of the skin, which is why it is important to cleanse, tone and moisturise in the morning as well as in the evening.
Cleansing rids the skin of surface toxins, makeup and perspiration. I have been using Aveeno products lately and the current range is based on soybean, which is well known to keep the skin smooth and soft. In particular, the Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser is soap free and won't be harsh on the skin.
Try to exfoliate every other day; this will remove the dead cells that have been trapped on the surface of the skin through natural oils and perspiration. The new Models Prefer Rub & Scrub (online soon!) is amazing and leaves the skin fresh and smooth.
It's also really important to balance your skin's pH. Cleansing can dry it out so using a toner like L'Oreal Age Perfect Toner will re-balance it to between 5.5 -7 where it is happiest. Always, always use a good moisturiser. I know some people don't like to use moisturiser as they think it will make their skin oily and cause more pimples but I promise you, that's not true! The only thing that will happen if you don't use a moisturiser is that your skin will look red, sore and actually make more pimples. This is because, if the skin is dry, the basal layer deep under the surface doesn't think it's making enough oil so it will start to make more. Even if your skin is dry, it will still shine if it's unbalanced, which means your makeup won't stay fresh throughout the day. Try the Skin Doctors range of moisturisers, which has some great products for all ages.
It's also very important to use an eye cream. The skin around your eyes is a lot finer than the rest of your face so needs a cream specifically suited to the area, such as Dr LeWinn's Firming Eye Cream. Use your ring finger to apply as that doesn't allow too much pressure, remembering to take the cream right around the orbital bone not just under the eye.
A lip balm really is your best friend. Give Nivea Pure lip balm a go – you will love it. And talking of things you'll love, I highly recommend you give my favourite body oil – Bio Oil – a try. As soon as you're out of the shower, apply all over your body, including hands and feet.
Finally, never ever leave the house without sunscreen. Banana Boat has a huge range of sunscreens depending on your skin type but I like to use the Faces Oil-Free SPF 30+ as it won't build up oily deposits on your face.
TIP: For a healthy start to your day, try a carrot, celery, beetroot and apple juice. It is packed with Vitamin A, B6, C, E, folate, potassium plus many more good things and is a great source of fibre. It will help to whiten your eyes, alleviate stress levels and is a fabulous mix for your skin to help it stay healthy and looking great.
